Armchairs, a mattress and Christmas trees were among the rubbish dumped in back streets by five people who have been fined a total of £2,310 for flytipping.
They were prosecuted by Bolton Council after admitting to enforcement officers that they had left the rubbish on the borough’s streets, and then failing to pay £80 fixed penalty fines for the offences.
Miroslav Rafai (46) was fined £550 with £200 costs and a £55 victim surcharge for dumping two armchairs behind his house in South Street. The police had to be called when he pushed and shouted at the enforcement officer investigating the rubbish.
Istval Kovacs (23), of Southfield Street, admitted leaving a mattress behind a friend’s house in Alder Street. He was ordered to pay a £440 fine, £200 costs and a £44 victim surcharge.
Igor Petrik (49), of Crescent Road, and Darina Zuzikova (36), of Woodgate Street, both dumped a Christmas tree behind their homes. Petrik also left wood and vinyl flooring.
There were each fined £440 with £200 costs and a £44 victim surcharge.
Lois Lee Turner (26), also of Woodgate Street, admitted leaving a large box of rubbish in her back street. She was also ordered to pay a £440 fine, £200 costs and a £44 victim surcharge.
All of the defendants failed to attend court and were found guilty by magistrates in their absence.
A council spokesman said: “Dumping waste in this way is disgusting; it blights neighbourhoods and adversely impacts on the quality of life of neighbours who have to live with it.
“These fines send out a strong message that flytipping will not be tolerated and that we will pursue people who do not pay fixed penalty notices.
“We would also encourage residents to help us tackle this problem by reporting people who dump rubbish to us.”
