Important information about your Christmas and New Year bin collections
Our collection teams will not be working Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day, meaning that there will be some changes to your bin collections.
There will be no green bin collection service from Monday 23 December 2024 to Friday 3 January 2025. This includes large green bins and smaller food waste containers for all households. Green bin collections will resume on Monday 6 January, as normal.
The table below explains the changes to bin collections over Christmas and New Year.

Know your bins this Christmas
Burgundy bins
Plastic pots, tubs and trays can now be recycled. Pop them into your burgundy bin along with items like bottles, cans and jars.
Beige bins
Christmas cards, ordinary wrapping paper and paper gift bags without glitter, as well as cardboard packaging, can be recycled in the beige bin.
What can’t be recycled?
Bows, ribbons, polystyrene, shiny wrapping paper and anything with glitter on cannot be recycled. These should go in your grey bin.
Batteries
Do not put batteries of any kind in grey bins or recycling bins as they can cause serious fires in waste wagons and at the recycling centre. Please put them in the recycling containers found at most supermarkets.
What to do with your Christmas tree
Bolton Hospice will collect Christmas trees on 6 and 7 January for a suggested minimum donation of £15. All Bolton postcodes are included. Book online from 1 December at www.boltonhospice.org.uk/christmas-tree or call 01204 663 055.
Or you can:
- Cut your Christmas tree into pieces and put it in your green bin
- Take your tree to the recycling centre and put it in the garden waste container
