When carrying out any building work/maintenance or removal of any part of a property which is adjacent to the public highway, the safety of all highway users must be paramount.
You will need a licence to use a mobile or large tower crane on a public highway.
- For the mobile crane the licence is valid for one day and must be renewed if the work will exceed this period.
- For the large tower crane the licence is valid for 12 months and must be renewed if the work will exceed this period.
Failure to obtain a licence or to follow the regulations of the licence may result in fines up to £5000.

Mobile Cranes
- SG11 Initial application fee including 1st day on site - (all road types) £254
- SG12 Consecutive days, per day (all road types) £37.50
Large Tower Cranes
- SG21 Initial fee and 12 months onsite (all road types) £602
- SG22 Consecutive months, per month (all road types) £37.50
Requirements
- During the erection or dismantling period, a safe working area at ground level is required to prevent pedestrians gaining access.
- In the town centre this work must be carried out outside normal working hours. (before 8am, after 6pm or on a Sunday)
