Sexual health

Bolton Council works alongside NHS partners and charitable groups to provide Sexual Health Services in the borough.

Adult sexual health services are provided by Bolton NHS Foundation Trust.

This service provides a free and confidential service offering advice and support on a range of sexual health issues across Bolton. They offer testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections (STIs). They also provide free contraception, including emergency contraception.

Services offered

  • Testing for, and advice on sexually transmitted infections (STIs) e.g. chlamydia, syphilis, gonorrhoea, and HIV
  • Advice about sexual health in general 
  • Support in contacting and informing partners of the need to access STI testing 
  • Contraception, including emergency contraception 
  • Advice for people who have been sexually assaulted 
  • PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) a medication that can help prevent you from developing HIV if you’ve been exposed to it 
  • PrEP a medication to help prevent HIV before you’ve been exposed to it 
  • Hepatitis A, B and HPV vaccinations for men who have sex with men (MSM) 
  • Other sexual problems e.g. pain during sex, sexual dysfunction & genital skin conditions. This will require a referral from your GP .
  • Free condoms

PaSh Partnership

The Passionate about Sexual Health (PaSH) Partnership) is a collaboration between BHA for Equality, George House Trust and the LGBT Foundation.

The PaSH Partnership will deliver a comprehensive programme of interventions to meet the changing needs of people newly diagnosed with HIV, living longer term with HIV or at greatest risk of acquiring HIV. More information can be found at PaSH (gmpash.org.uk).

Your first contact for routine contraception methods is your GP surgery, who will discuss with you the methods available and what might be most appropriate.
