Please ensure you have read the eligibility section before completing an application form.
Eligibility
Section A: Are you a low-income family?
Low income families are those where a parent/carer is eligible for free school meals or is receiving maximum Working Tax Credits/ or Universal Credit (with an earned income below £7400).
- If you are a low income family, please see Section B.
- If you are not a low income family, please see Section C.
You can find more information on our free school meals and help with school uniform page.
Section B: If you are a low-income family, the child or young person may be eligible for a bus pass if:
- They are primary aged and are attending their nearest suitable school which is more than 2 miles from their home.
- They are aged between 11-16 years and are attending one of their three nearest suitable schools which is more than 2 miles but less than 6 miles from their home.
- They are aged between 11-16 years and are attending their nearest suitable school preferred by religion, faith, or belief, and this school is more than 2 miles but less than 15 miles from their home. Evidence of active worship will be required.
If one of the above criteria is not met, the child or young person will not be eligible for a bus pass.
Section C: If you are not a low-income family, the child or young person may be eligible for a bus pass if:
- They are under 8 and are attending their nearest suitable school which is more than 2 miles from their home.
- They are 8 years or over and are attending their nearest suitable school which is more than 3 miles from their home.
Please note: If you move address, you may not be eligible for a free school bus pass if school places are available nearer. However, where a pupil is in their final year of primary education (Year 6) or final two years of secondary education (Years 10 and 11), and the school is more than 3 miles from their new address (or 2 miles in the case of a child from a low-income group), the pupil may be eligible for a free bus pass if they were attending their nearest school to their previous address. Evidence of the change of address will be required, for example, a utility bill or a Council Tax bill.
If one of the above criteria is not met, the child or young person will not be eligible for a bus pass.
Eligibility under this policy ends at the end of year 11 in secondary school.
If you think you are eligible, please complete an application form.
