What we can and cannot investigate
We will investigate..
Common breaches of planning that include:
- the carrying out of work without the required planning permission
- failure to comply with any condition set by us when planning permission was granted
- change of use of a building or land without planning permission
- untidy land or buildings affecting the amenity of the area
- unauthorised advertisements or signs
- unauthorised works to a listed building
- unauthorised work to protected trees (those in a conservation area or protected by a tree preservation order). If your complaint relates to unauthorised work to a protected tree, please see trees and conservation areas
We will not investigate..
- complaints that fall under another council area, for example, works blocking or taking place in the highway would be the responsibility of the highways authority
- complaints that would be better dealt with by a different service, for example, noise disturbance would be the responsibility of environmental health.
- anonymous complaints, unless they relate to criminal activity in connection with listed buildings, tree preservation orders, or trees in conservation areas

- For neighbourhood, land boundary or ownership disputes, please seek independent legal advice
- For concerns around vehicles on road causing a hazard, vehicles being untaxed, or the vehicle details appearing to be different from those registered with DVLA please contact the police
