The Mayor of Bolton is urging people to pick up their poppy and support the armed forces.

Mayor poppy appeal 2020

Cllr Linda Thomas has received the first poppy of the local campaign. From this Friday (23 October) the annual Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal will be raising funds to help servicemen and veterans.

The Poppy Appeal is the Royal British Legion’s biggest fundraising campaign held every year in November, the period of Remembrance.

“The coronavirus Covid-19 pandemic has had an impact on the Royal British Legion and the support it provides to serviceman and veterans,” said Cllr Thomas.

“We need people to support this vital work by buying a poppy in shops or online, volunteering to help distribute poppies where they are able to, or taking part in other fundraising activities.

“This year marks the 75th Anniversary of the end of the Second World War. Sadly the continuing pandemic means that we will not be able to commemorate their service and remember the fallen in our usual way together.

“However, we are determined that we will commemorate Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday in the most fitting way that is possible.”

This year’s Poppy Appeal is running from this Friday 23 October right through to Armistice Day (11 November).

Poppies will be available from major supermarkets such as Sainsburys, Morrisons and Asda, and online at the Royal British Legion website: www.britishlegion.org.uk/
