A £1.9 million scheme to improve two major Farnworth junctions will start on Monday, July 24.
Bolton Council will be making significant changes to the junctions of Manchester Road and Loxham Street, and Bolton Road and Egerton Street.
Traffic signals will be upgraded and the roads will be resurfaced at both junctions. Manchester Road will also be widened to provide a left turn lane into Loxham Street.
The new design will increase capacity for vehicles, improve traffic flow and reduce congestion in the area to benefit all road users. The upgrade of crossing facilities at the Loxham Street junction will also make it easier and safer for pedestrians and cyclists to use.
The whole scheme is expected to take six months to complete subject to weather conditions.
It is funded by the Greater Manchester Local Growth Deal and delivered by Bolton Council and Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) as part of the Salford Bolton Network Improvement programme (SBNI).
Both junctions will remain open to traffic during the improvement works, but road closures may be required at certain key times to allow works to be completed.
These will be advertised in advance on site, and diversions will be signposted and publicised. Residents and businesses will continue to be able to access their properties during the work.
Temporary traffic signals will also be in operation at certain times while work is under way, for the safety of motorists and workers on site. In an effort to minimise disruption, the majority of the work will be carried out between 9.30am and 3.30pm.
Motorists are also asked to be aware of gas mains diversion work Cadent is carrying out at the junction of Loxham St and Manchester Road, which will cause some disruption. From Saturday, July 22 there will be a right turn ban in place for seven days from Manchester Road into Loxham Street and diversions will be signposted on site.
Bolton Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways, Councillor David Chadwick, said: “Once this work is carried out, there should be noticeable improvements at these junctions for all users.
“We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused to residents and road users.
“It is inevitable that there will be some disruption but we are making every effort to minimise this.”
