Work to make roads around Bolton Interchange safer starts next week.

Improvements will take place to create a new Bolton Rail Station dop off / pick up facility. The scheme is being carried out by local contractors Bethell Construction Ltd and will take four months to complete.

The work is being delivered using Local Growth Deal funding by Bolton Council and Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) as part of a set of wider highway improvements included within the Salford Bolton Network Improvement Programme (SBNI).

Work to be carried out includes:

  • Demolition of the redundant bus shelters outside the railway station
  • Construction of a drop off / pick up short stay parking facility for passengers.
  • Remodelling of the existing taxi rank
  • A cycle  link between the recently completed CYCLOPS junction improvement at Newport St and Trinity St to the cycle hub outside Bolton Interchange

The existing taxi rank will be temporarily closed and relocated to Trinity Street for the duration of the works. There will be lane closures on Newport Street whilst the works take place, but the road will remain open.

Bolton Council’s Executive Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, Cllr Stuart Haslam, said:

“Local residents and visitors to the town centre will see their journeys made more accessible and most importantly made safer by these improvements.

“Traffic congestion will be reduced, and roads will be made safer for pedestrians accessing the station and taxi ranks.

“Whether traveling by bus, car, train, bike or on foot you will benefit from the work that’s being carried out.

“The completed scheme will also greatly improve the appearance of the area and enhance the environment of this part of Newport Street.”
