Help mark International Women’s Day by sharing your stories and those of other brilliant Bolton women.

IWD 2021From today, the Bolton Council’s social media accounts will be sharing images and inspiring words from women in the community, businesses, health, politics, the arts and much more.

Women across Bolton can join in and share their own images by using the hashtags #TeamBolton #IWD2021 and #WomensHistoryMonth.

The campaign will run throughout Women’s History Month, which in March each year celebrates the historical and contemporary contributions of women.

Bolton Council’s Library and Museum Service has also organised a series of virtual events and exhibitions to coincide with Women’s History Month:

  • March 1: Caroline Birley – considered to be the first female geologist
  • March 8: Book recommendations to celebrate International Women’s Day
  • March 11: Discover more about the women artists who feature in the new art gallery display
  • W/c March 15: Take another look at more female artists who’s work appears in the new art gallery display
  • W/c March 22: A feature on the ‘Brilliant Bolton Women’ display in the town hall – ‘Who would you choose to feature in an updated version of the display?’

International Women’s Day is held each year on March 8.

The theme this year is #ChoosetoChallenge, asking all of us what more we can do to create a gender equal world.

The Mayor of Bolton, Cllr Linda Thomas, said: “International Women’s Day is an important event in the calendar, when we remember and pay tribute to all those inspirational women who have gone before, pioneers who have become our role models.

“As we all grow in confidence, we push the boundaries further each year.

“Just so this year with #ChooseToChallenge as the 2021 IWD Campaign theme because a challenged world is an alert world!

“We quite rightly always take responsibility for our own thoughts and actions and so it is our choice to challenge gender bias and inequality wherever we come across it.

“Alongside this we must celebrate women’s achievements so collectively we can work towards a more inclusive world.

“So proudly put your hand up high to show you agree and you will be part of making a challenge to create ‘change for the better’. Let’s see your response!”
