He was a van driver for Wigglesworth's Ltd for seven years before setting up his own business as a carrier. He began with one vehicle in a garage behind the Wheatsheaf Hotel, Church Street, then moved to premises in Roseberry Street. After a fire there he built new premises on Bolton Road.
Represented Central Ward from 1939.
Chairman of Library Committee.
Anglican - he worshipped at the Parish Church. He was Sidesman and People's Warden there and a former chorister at Daisy Hill Church.
Served in France in First World War. Took a keen interest in Westhoughton British Legion, of which he was a Vice-President.
Vice-President of Wingates Band.
His wife Alice (nee Lowe) was the daughter of Mr and Mrs William Lowe, the Westhoughton grocers. Her brother was William Lowe, Chairman of Westhoughton UDC 1936-37, 1946-47.
