Cotton spinner - proprietor of Lever Street Mills.
Father of Peter Rothwell Arrowsmith, Mayor of Bolton 1853-55.
He married Alice Rothwell daughter of a saddler in Deansgate, on 1 December 1811 at Bolton Parish Church and took over the Cross Keys Inn (which later became the Derby Arms) on Churchgate.
On the death of his father, James Arrowsmith - a counterpane and quilt manufacturer, who had a warehouse built in Craddock Lane - he took over the family firm, left the Inn and went to live in Green Street, Little Bolton. He later entered the cotton trade, enlarging Robin Hood Mill in Lever Street (until it was destroyed by fire in 1858).
Borough Reeve of Little Bolton 1835, Trustee of Little Bolton and served as a Grenadier in the local Militia.
He was a reformer, campaigning to change the Court Leet system and was a leading figure in the struggle for incorporation of the Borough in 1838.
Represented East Ward 1838-44 and Bradford Ward 1852-54.
Alderman for Bradford Ward 1854-61. Magistrate from 1839.
Retired to Southport in 1861.
Anglican - church benefactor. As his two predecessors had been Unitarians he was the first member of the Church of England to become Mayor of Bolton.
