Take action on food waste

Reducing household food waste is one of the easiest ways to save both money and the planet
- Over a third of all food is wasted[1] and
- 60% of this is at a household level[2].
- This costs the average family of four £1000 a year[3].
Reducing our food waste is an action that could make a significant contribution to our fight against climate change.
In 2024, Bolton Council, in partnership with the University of Salford, undertook a food waste study. The study was funded by the National Institute of Health and Care Research (NIHR) as part of their Local Authority Doctoral Fellowship Scheme and found that working together is the best way forward.
As part of the learning from the study, a toolkit has been created to support communities in reducing their household food waste.
