Bolton residents are being asked to share their views on proposed changes to the Local Council Tax Support scheme.

Support is given to around 30,000 individuals and families in Bolton whose financial circumstances mean they are entitled to help with paying their council tax.

Under the scheme, working households currently receive an 87.5% discount, meaning residents pay 12.5% of their overall council tax bill.

The council has put forward four options for proposed changes, which would see some of these households pay more council tax from April 2021.

  • Option 1: Increase the household bill to 17.5% (An extra £1.16 a week on a Band A home)
  • Option 2: Increase the household bill to 20% (An extra £1.74 a week on a Band A home)
  • Option 3: Increase the household bill to 22.5% (An extra £2.32 a week on a Band A home)
  • Option 4: Increase the household bill to 25% (An extra £2.90 a week on a Band A home)

Pension aged households would not be affected by any changes and single person households would continue to receive the 25% discount.

Those who currently pay full council tax would not be affected by any changes.

Residents are invited to share their views on the proposed changes either online or by calling 01204 331 590 to request a paper questionnaire (this can be returned by post free of charge).

All Bolton residents can take part, not just those in receipt of support.

Consultation responses will be taken into account before any final decision is made.

Responses should be completed by Friday, December 11.
