Rainbow themed food featured on school meal menus in Bolton in the Summer term– reminding pupils of the importance of caring for their health and others.

The rainbow became a symbol of hope during the pandemic, and cooks were given free rein to design colourful versions of school meal recipes every Thursday.

Creations included rainbow themed pizza, salad, and buns, and chefs also joined in a competition to create a rainbow cake.

During the pandemic, Bolton Council’s kitchen managers and assistants have turned out every day, including bank holidays, to ensure that children who continued to attend school received a healthy lunch.

Bolton Council’s Executive Cabinet Member for Environmental Services Delivery, Cllr Adele Warren, said: “Our school meals staff are just some of the unsung heroes that have been working throughout the pandemic.

“I want to thank them for their hard work and excellent support throughout this really difficult time.

“They have really demonstrated the importance of eating well, and things like this really help to get the healthy eating message across in a fun way.

“Our school dinners only cost £1.80, which is fantastic value for a healthy, nutritionally balanced meal and amongst the lowest priced in the UK.

“And our staff are now getting ready, preparing to welcome children back to school next month.”

The council is also continuing to subsidise the cost of a school meal, which means that the price to buy a lunch for nursery and primary school children (in years three to six) is only £1.80.

To sign up for school meals in September, contact your school directly.

The catering team at St Peter’s Smithills Dean CE Primary won the rainbow cake competition.

The team at Gilnow Primary School team also won a prize for their weekly rainbow themed food.

All staff will receive certificates for their contributions.
