Consultation on two multi-million pound walking and cycling routes in Bolton has been extended.

Bolton Council is seeking views on proposals for Westhoughton, and Astley Bridge and Crompton.

Comments can now be submitted until August 31, giving residents more chance to have their say.

The schemes have been developed as part of the Mayor of Greater Manchester’s £160m Cycling and Walking Challenge Fund.

The plans form part of the Bee Network, which aims to create the largest cycling and walking network in the UK.

The aim of both projects is to increase active travel and create safe, pleasant and healthy environments in the neighbourhoods.

Proposals for the £5.8m Westhoughton and £9m Astley Bridge and Crompton Active Neighbourhood schemes could include:-

• traffic calming, new signage and road surface markings
• new and upgraded pedestrian and cycle crossings on both residential roads and main roads
• changes to the traffic priority on some residential streets to support pedestrians and cyclists
• segregated cycle routes and upgrading footpaths.

Cllr Stuart Haslam, Bolton Council’s Executive Cabinet Member for Highways, said: “We have had a number of submissions so far – please keep them coming.

“We want people living in these areas to have their say on what they do and don’t want to see and the feedback we receive will help us to draw up plans for the areas.

“The more comments we receive the more it will help us to shape and develop the schemes.

“We want to make it easier for people to move around either on foot or bike, without inconveniencing responsible motorists.”

Following a development phase, the council will seek the funding needed to bring each scheme forward for implementation.
