More than 2,700 residents have put forward suggestions for making Bolton more pedestrian and cycling friendly – and Bolton Council is keen to hear from even more people.

Safe Streets Save LivesBolton, like other towns and cities, has seen a big increase in cycling and walking during the coronavirus lockdown.

The authority has secured funding from Transport for Greater Manchester to implement measures to help make streets and roads safer to move around and help with social distancing.

The first phase of the #SafeStreetsSaveLives consultation resulted in 2,260 responses.

Some suggestions put forward have already been implemented. The council has widened footpaths on Newport Street, Knowsley Street and Blackhorse Street near the market.

The council is now reopening the consultation to give people a further opportunity to provide more comments on safe cycle and walking measures, and how well the temporary measures that have been installed are working.

Cllr Stuart Haslam, Executive Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said: “We’ve had a great response from our residents and we are listening to what they’re saying about local issues and what measures they want to see put in place.

“The challenge of coronavirus means we have to think about how to make our streets safer whether that’s with wider pavements, looking at crossings or additional cycle lanes, while ensuring that any measures introduced do not increase congestion and are not anti-motorist.

“We hope that by reopening the consultation we will get even more feedback which will help us to plan what we do.”
