Latest online services and activities available this week from the Library and Museum Service.

Silly Squad Summer Reading Challenge is almost here!

This year’s Summer Reading Challenge, Silly Squad, starts this Friday 5 June and Bolton Libraries are inviting all children aged 4 to 11 to take part.

Each year, children are set the challenge to read 6 books over the summer and will receive a medal at the end if they complete it!

This year, children are being encouraged to complete the challenge online and can use library books or books they have at home – they all count.

Children can also download eBooks and eAudio books from BorrowBox using their Bolton library card, there are hundreds of brilliant titles on there!

To celebrate the launch of Silly Squad this week we will be having fun online – watch out for funny fish and Egyptian board games. On Facebook Shasha will be reading her favourite silly story live at 11am on Friday (5 June) and Emma will be chatting about funny books live at 11.30am on Sunday (7 June).

We are also launching our Summer Reading Challenge Facebook group where families can take part in challenges and activities throughout the summer – just look under our ‘groups’ tab to sign up now!

And don’t forget to visit www.sillysquad.org.uk to sign up for the challenge from 5 June and you can also visit www.summerreadingchallenge.org.uk for more information.

Benefits of Reading and Children’s Book Chat

  • Children who read for pleasure are likely to do better at school, have more empathy and better relationships with others, and better overall wellbeing.
  • Reading gives children the opportunity to feel connected and to see the world through others’ eyes, as well as finding themselves in the stories they read
  • It’s also lot of fun!
  • People have been reading more since lockdown began - In a recent survey by Booktrust, 47% of parents said they are seeing their children reading more by themselves and 34% said their children are being read to more. 11% said they have read their child a bedtime story for the first time ever during this period.
  • Children’s Book Chat with Emma provides weekly recommendations of brilliant books for children and young people to read.
  • The chat has a different theme every week and Emma gives recommendations for children and young people of all ages, from babies right through to teenagers.
  • The chat is live, and parents can comment, ask questions and share what their children are enjoying reading right now.
  • Children’s Book Chat takes place every Sunday at 11.30am at https://www.facebook.com/BoltonLibraryandMuseumServices/ and videos of the previous chats are available to watch now. From Sunday 14 June Children’s Book Chat is moving into the Summer Reading Challenge Facebook group.
