Bolton Council is launching a series of walking tours and maps to outline the history and geography of the Crompton ward.
The walks have been developed by local tour guide Suzanne Hindle, with assistance from local history groups and Bolton Museum and Libraries Service and with funding from the area forum.
In order to develop the tours and the maps, sessions were held with residents to talk about their memories of the area at local community centres and print-making sessions were also held with pupils at local primary schools.
The result is a series of walking routes which take you through the Crompton ward; which include local memories and information about the history of the ward. The Crompton Walks series ranges from a thirty minute stroll around the Astley Bridge area to a two hour circular walk from Hall’i’th’wood taking you through The Valley along the River Tonge.
The first walk will begin on Monday 24th April at 10.30am and includes a tour around the historic “ACDO” premises at Astley Bridge by Managing Director of ACDOPRO, Brandon Pilling. The tour will include looking around his grandfather Harry Pilling’s office and examining machinery used to produce and promote the original ‘miracle wash tablet’ he launched in Crompton in the 1900s.
