Thousands packed into Victoria Square last night to watch Coronation Street star Alan Halsall switch on the town’s Christmas Lights.

Crowds were treated to live performances at the event, which was sponsored by Market Place Shopping Centre.

Alan, who has played Corrie favourite Tyrone Dobbs for 20 years, brought his daughter, mum, brother and nephew with him.

He said: “I was thrilled to be asked to do it. I’ve spent a lot of time in Bolton and I have absolutely loved kicking off Christmas here with my family, switching on the town’s lights and of course seeing Father Christmas.”

Entertainment included Bolton Baton Twirlers, Dance Fusion, All Starz Children’s Workshop and performances from Bolton Lads and Girls Club, Little Fix - a Little Mix tribute band, local boy band Conixi, and soloist Krisshan Jade.

The switch-on also featured the cast of The Albert Halls’ Christmas pantomime Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, which is running from December 1 to 30.

A spectacular procession featuring the Bolton Light Festival Lantern Parade, also wound its way into the square as the 50-strong Rock Choir performed.

The parade featured dozens of imaginative creations crafted by community groups and school children.

Leader of Bolton Council, Cllr Linda Thomas, added: “The atmosphere in Victoria Square for our annual Christmas Lights party was fantastic.

“The crowd came out in their thousands despite the weather. The light festival parade was a sight to behold and it was wonderful to see the number of community groups and school children that had joined in.

“The show is always a great night out for all the family - Alan was the perfect guest and it was lovely that he brought his family with him.

“Of course, this is only the beginning of Christmas in Bolton as the town centre will be transformed for our annual Winter Festival, which starts in a fortnight.”

The Market Place Shopping Centre also hosted street performers and musicians.

Nikki Wilson Cook, Market Place Centre Manager, said: “We’re absolutely thrilled at the success of last night’s Christmas lights switch on.

“The town was buzzing and everyone seemed to be thoroughly getting in the spirit of the season and enjoying the fun, which is what it’s all about!”

Bolton’s Winter Festival takes place from December 8 to January 6, and highlights include a giant covered ice rink and Santa’s Grotto in The Albert Halls.
