Detailed designs for a new library in Little Lever are expected to be discussed in the New Year.

A planning application is due to be submitted to the council and all affected parties will then be consulted formally.

It is anticipated the plans will be determined by the council’s planning committee in February.

Bolton Council announced its plans to create a new, modern library and community health facility back in March and designers have since been working on more detailed proposals with the local authority and health partners.

The new facility will replace Little Lever’s current library, in Coronation Square, which has outgrown demand from the local community.

Leader of Bolton Council, Cllr Cliff Morris, said: “The library is currently very well used by all ages, and offers a range of services and classes. However, due to its size we are limited in what we can offer.

“The library service is constantly developing and by creating a new, modern library with associated car parking we can provide so much more to the people of Little Lever. By bringing health services under the same roof this gives us the opportunity to attract even more people to the library and it will create a facility that will become an integral part of the community for years to come.”

As well as developing existing library services, building on computer access and increasing community-led events, the facility will also house three GP practices that currently operate in the area.

Su Long, Chief Officer of NHS Bolton CCG, said: "Bolton CCG has worked closely with the council to develop these plans for Little Lever.  We are proud the NHS has invested around £1.5 million in the new facility, which is situated in a key location and will replace the existing Health Centre on Mytham Road. The relocation of the three GP practices, and associated community care services, will address access issues due to the increase in the number of treatment and consulting rooms.

“The overall aim is to improve patient experience and provide modern, fit for purpose premises in functional and efficient accommodation. Patient views will be sought in due course to help shape and inform the final design."

The future use of the current library building will be decided in due course but it is hoped to retain it for community use and the Little Lever war memorial will be retained and preserved.
