Bolton Council is building a modern, larger school to replace the current Chorley New Road Primary School.
It is being built on the existing site and is due to be ready for pupils in time for the start of term in September 2018.
Once the new school is completed, the old building will be demolished and the land will be used as recreational space.
Work started on the project around late August and a ceremonial steel signing event will be held on December 5, to mark the installation of the steel frame.
The decision to build a new school was made in response to the need for extra primary school places in the area to accommodate families from the Rivington Chase housing development, which will be built on the site of the former Horwich Loco Works.
The current school is single form entry and the new school will become two-form entry.
Cabinet Member for Education, Schools, Safeguarding and Looked After Children, Cllr Ann Cunliffe, said: “It is exciting to see that work on the new Chorley New Road school is progressing at pace. I’m looking forward to seeing the completed project and having a lovely, new and modern facility in Horwich.
“The steel signing event marks a significant step in the progress of the project as people will then begin to see the structural outline of the new school.”
The school is being built for the council by Willmott Dixon. It forms part of a range of developments for Horwich, including a new £10 million leisure centre and 3G pitch.
