The Mayor of Bolton invited history-making local boxer Cindy Ngamba to a special civic reception to toast her success at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Cindy NgambaCindy inspired millions as the Bolton boxer secured a bronze medal, becoming the first athlete to win a medal for the Refugee Olympic Team.

Cindy moved to Bolton from Cameroon as a refugee at 12 years old, and overcame many hurdles on her way to becoming a boxing Olympic medallist.

The athlete was fully supported by Team GB and trained with the squad in Sheffield.

She took part in the pre-games photoshoot and was cheered on by GB boxing coach during her semi-final match with Atheyna Bylon.

Despite being supported by GB Boxing, Cindy has not yet been granted UK citizenship so could not represent Team GB in the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Cindy’s boxing journey started at the age of 15, where she started training at the Bolton Lads and Girls’ Club.

The athlete has received a wealth of support back home in Bolton, including from the Mayor of Bolton, Cllr Andy Morgan.

The Mayor watched the big match at Elite Boxing Gym in Halliwell where Cindy has trained.

To recognise her achievements and to thank her for sharing her inspirational story, the Mayor invited Cindy and her family to a civic reception yesterday (8 December).

Mayor of Bolton, Cllr Andy Morgan, said:

“Cindy has represented the best of Bolton on a global stage and as a town we are immensely proud of her achievements.

“It was a fantastic night watching Cindy win a bronze medal and the atmosphere in the room just shows how she is part of the Bolton family.

“Her story is truly inspirational and despite facing many challenges, her natural talent and determination have brought her to becoming a well-deserved Olympic medallist.

“Bolton cannot wait to see what is next in store for Cindy.”
