With temperatures set to plumet in the coming days, Bolton Council continues to support residents to stay warm and safe in the harsh temperatures.

The Met Office has forecast temperatures as low as 1C in Bolton towards the end of this week, in contrast to the relatively mild weather so far this Winter.

Ahead of this, Bolton Council has reminded residents of the wide range of support and advice available in particular for anyone worried about the rising cost of household energy.

This includes advice on household heating, debt, benefits, housing, as well as skills and employment guidance, health and wellbeing information and support for businesses.

A dedicated webpage has been set up at bolton.gov.uk/costofliving where the public can find out more.

The council has also established a network of warm spaces at all 10 local libraires, offering residents a place to keep warm, enjoy a hot drink and meet others.

A full list and a map of available warm spaces can be found online.

Bolton Council Deputy Leader, Cllr Hilary Fairclough, said:

“Later this week we will see the coldest temperatures so far this winter in Bolton.

“This will be a great cause of concern for many residents worried about the additional cost of keeping their homes warm.

“Help is available, not only as practical advice and guidance, but our warm spaces offer valuable support to anyone on a tight budget who may be struggling to stave off the cold.

“We also ask residents to keep an eye on vulnerable family, friends and neighbours who may be more at extra risk during the cold weather.”

Cold temperatures present a particular risk to the most vulnerable in the community including anyone who may be sleeping rough.

Bolton Council’s rough sleeping team are on hand to help if anyone sees someone they believe to be rough sleeping.

A description of the person and their specific location can be shared anonymously by email on housingoutreachteam@bolton.gov.uk or by phoning the Housing Options Services on 01204 335 900.

The winter weather also poses a risk to road users, and drivers are asked to be aware of changing conditions in the days ahead.

Bolton Council’s Highways team receive weather forecasts daily and closely monitor road surface temperatures using weather stations.

Gritters are dispatched, when needed, to ensure highways are as safe as possible.

A full route grit was carried out at 7pm last night and further gritting will take place throughout the winter as required.
