It’s party time this Sunday (July 9) as High Street Library celebrates the 10th anniversary of its new building.

Residents are invited to come along and share in the celebrations at the library, off Derby Street, from 2pm to 4pm.

Visitors can enjoy a slice of cake and take a trip down memory lane. A display of photographs and videos will document the construction of the £1.2 million library which opened on July 11, 2007.

The old library closed in 2006 after more than 100 years serving the community.

On Saturday (July 8) children can also join in craft activities from 9am to 5pm for the big anniversary bash.

Staff will help children make bunting and a giant card which everyone who attends the celebrations will be invited to sign.

A ‘Story and Craft’ session will also be held from 2.15pm to 3pm where children will be making a special anniversary bookmark.

Bolton Council’s Executive Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Cllr Ebrahim Adia, said: “High Street Library is a fantastic amenity for the local community and the new building has been a huge success.

“The new library has kept the community spirit and feel of the older library as well as adapting successfully with the times - High Street was one of the first libraries in Bolton to have free Wifi.

“The library has always been very popular with children and the wider community. I remember using the library when I was a young lad and what an important part of the community it was, which continues to the present day.

“We would really like as many people to come along and join in the celebrations this weekend.”

Improvements that were made as part of the £1.2 million refurbishment included: on the ground floor - a computer suite for public use, an interview room for use by external services on the ground floor, and on the first floor - two community rooms for use by local community organisations.
