A tireless campaigner for Bolton’s young people has received deserved recognition for his work championing the causes of underrepresented groups.

Jonathan OwenJonathan Owen, 17, has been given the High Sheriff Young Citizenship Award for his years of work on behalf of young people in Bolton, Greater Manchester and across the North West.

The Tonge Moor teenager has worked with Bolton Youth Voice for six years, a tenure which also saw him serve two years as an elected member of the Youth Parliament.

Jonathan also represents Bolton on the Greater Manchester Youth Combined Authority and has recently been a steering group member for Youth Focus North West.

Campaigns he has worked on include projects to reduce the stigma attached to poor mental health, young people who are looked after and those struggling with their identity.

The award comes as recognition for his remarkable drive and determination to make sure the voice of young people is listened to and acted upon.

Bolton Council’s Executive Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, Cllr Anne Galloway, said:

“Congratulations to Jonathan who is a great example of the many hardworking and community-minded young people here in Bolton.

“This award shows the value of Bolton Youth Voice and our continued work to make sure we listen to the priorities and needs of young people in our borough.”

Jonathan said: “It was a lovely surprise receiving the award, it made me really happy because it was nice to know the work I had done for Bolton Youth Voice had been recognised.”

Bolton Youth Voice brings together Bolton Youth Council, local Youth MPs, Voice 4 U and the Leaving Care Forum, to provide a platform for young people to address the issues which matter to them.
