The recent addition of COVID Support Officers to Bolton’s shopping areas has proved a success. National government funding has enabled four support officers to work within the town centre and district centres since 5 December. Their role is to support people and local businesses in Bolton and ensure everyone continues to adhere to the COVID-19 rules.

The team has been reminding shoppers to wear face coverings and handing them out to people who have forgotten to bring one.

They have also been supporting businesses by distributing posters displaying the face covering message and going into stores to speak to customers without face coverings.

Feedback they’ve received from both members of the public and businesses has been positive.

Cllr Fairclough, Executive Cabinet Member for Regulatory Services, said: “These officers are a great addition to support the town centre keeping safe and help stop the spread of this virus.

“They’re helping to make sure everyone has a safe and great shopping experience.”

Cathryn Moore, Wilko Store Manager, added: “The Covid Support Officers are a great support and are really helping our stores to maintain a safe environment for our customers and team members.”

COVID Support Officers do not have enforcement powers but will report any serious breaches to the relevant council department.
