The Bolton archives and local studies service
We are based in the History Centre at Bolton Central Library and provide a wide range of material relating to the Bolton area, which is complemented by collections of local interest items in our libraries.
The Central Library has a large collection of local history items for loan, including books and DVDs.

Computers / microform readers
We have 2 computers and 2 readers. The computers are first come, first served.
If you are travelling from outside the borough of Bolton, we would recommend you contact us to reserve a machine/computer.

Important information before you visit us
In accordance with National Archives policy, upon entering the History Centre, all bags and pens must be placed in the lockers provided. Any cold drinks with lids/caps must also be placed in lockers
Any food or drinks (hot or otherwise) without caps cannot be brought in (this includes coffee cups).
Whilst you are allowed to bring your mobile in with you, we ask customers if they could please be respectful of others and leave it on silent.
Rules on reproducing archives
Before viewing archives, please ask a member of staff whether you are able to take photographs as some of our stock is still under copyright, embargoed or data protected.
If an item is still under copyright law, you will only be able to digitally copy up to 5% of the pages of a respective text. The same applies for the amount of photocopies.
If you are unable to take photographs or photocopies you can take notes from them with pencil and paper.
If you have permission to take photographs and wish to reproduce them formally in a published work (either online or physically) or an academic paper, please email us with an official request.

Other libraries
At Westhoughton, Horwich, Harwood and Farnworth libraries we have significant collections of material relating specifically to those areas and these include original documents.
Westhoughton Library houses the Pretoria Pit Collection and Horwich Library holds material on the Horwich Loco Works.
Every community library has a smaller selection of local studies material for reference and for loan.
