Bolton Council approved the introduction of a mandatory emissions standard in December 2024. This was for all licensed hackney carriage and private hire vehicles but was subject to the Government agreeing to the provision of a Clean Taxi Fund, with sufficient financial resources.
The Government has shared their response to Greater Manchester’s investment-led Clean Air Plan proposal: Government backs local plans for clean air in Greater Manchester - GOV.UK
The submitted plan had proposed a £30.5m Clean Taxi Fund to support the GM-licensed hackney and private hire trade upgrade to cleaner vehicles linked to minimum emission standards.
The approved investment-led package includes £8 million to support moving Greater Manchester’s hackney carriage fleet to cleaner vehicles. Greater Manchester leaders understand how critical this is for the licensed trade and are committed to ensuring that those registered locally have access to financial assistance.
They are now considering how the allocated taxi funding will be best used to support vehicle upgrades in the Greater Manchester-licensed fleet. A report will be considered at the Greater Manchester Combined Authority meeting on 31 January 2025.
Further updates will be given in due course.
