Wigan hackney carriage rank

The Licensing Team at Wigan are receiving a high volume of complaints in relation to vehicles licensed outside of the Borough parking, stopping or waiting on a hackney carriage rank; in close proximity to a rank; or in contravention of a road traffic regulation order.  This is taking up considerable resources for the Licensing Team, as well as their Parking Services Team, and therefore we are looking at ways in which we can help educate drivers licensed outside of Wigan Borough. 

"We feel that if a vehicle that is licensed outside of our Borough, stops or waits on one of our hackney carriage ranks, this could be seen as a public safety risk and give the appearance of plying for hire.  In Wigan we are now promoting a ‘Get Home Safe’ Campaign which refers to our available hackney carriage ranks, as well as advises visitors what to look out for when getting into a private hire or hackney carriage vehicle.

We are fully aware that cross border hiring is permitted, but we want to manage this as best we can, to ensure the safety of the public within our Borough, and ensure our resources are being used effectively, in relation to those licensed within our Borough."
