Colliery undermanager and mining engineer.
He left school at 12 and worked in the mill before at 14 working at Scot Lane Pit. He was from a mining family and became a pit under-manager and later a stand-by manager.
He studied coal mining and took a three year tutorial course in economics with the Workers Educational Association at Westhoughton
Gave up work as a miner with Westhoughton Coal & Cannell Co Ltd due to health reasons and became a master window cleaner
Represented Central Ward on Blackrod UDC 1938-47 and 48-72. Magistrate.
He chaired every Committee and when he retired in 1983 was thought to have been the country's longest serving local Council representative at the time.
Governor of Rivington and Blackrod High School and also President of Blackrod Workingmen's Club.
Enjoyed playing bowls and was a former Secretary of Blackrod and District Charity Bowling Handicap Committee.
He was for six years a drummer with various dance bands, including Jolley's, Blackrod and Challender's Horwich.
*Elected originally as an Independent but later joined the Conservative group.
