Builder and undertaker.
Began the family firm after returning from service in the First World War - turning the enterprise over to his brother Percy in 1947 but taking control again following his brother's death a few years later.
As Chairman he escorted the Queen Mother (then Queen Elizabeth) from Turton Station to Turton Tower during her tour of Lancashire in 1948. The Queen presented a signed portrait of herself which hung in the Council Chamber there.
Also during his first term of office he presented the Council with a medallion - a replica of the Chairman's own - for the use of the Chairman's Lady. A matching chain was later donated by Andrew T Jardine.
Chairman of the Health Committee.
Representative of Turton on Bolton Joint Sewage Board.
Congregationalist - he worshipped at Edgworth Congregational Church.
