Sewing cotton manufacturer. Director of James Chadwick and Brother Ltd, Eagley Mills.
Son of Edward Hyde Greg, he was a member of the Greg family of Quarry Bank Mill, Styal, Cheshire and great grandson of the founder, Samuel Greg.
In 1888 he married Marian Cross, eldest daughter of the late John Kynaston Cross, MP for Bolton and sometime Under-Secretary of State for India.
Represented Eagley Ward. Magistrate.
Chairman of the Local Education Committee.
Member of Lancashire County Council.
Lt Colonel in the Cheshire Regiment serving in France in the First World War. Holder of the Volunteer Decoration.
Made a Companion of the Order of the Bath on 1 January 1918, for War Services.
President of Eagley Cricket Club and of Bolton Cricket Association.
Patron of Eagley Lads Club and Eagley Book Society.
Lived for a time at Higher Dunscar House, Egerton but his main home was Norcliffe Hall, Styal, Cheshire.
He lost two sons in the First World War:
Robert Philips Greg, a Second Lieutenant serving with The Cheshire Regiment, was killed in action in Belgium on 3 May 1918, aged 19.
Arthur Tylston Greg also served as a Lieutenant with The Cheshire Regiment and was seriously wounded at Ypres in 1915. He recovered to return to active service and in 1916 was promoted to Captain and volunteered to join the Royal Flying Corps. His plane was shot down and he was killed on St George's Day, 23 April 1917, aged 22. His wartime sweetheart, the writer and illustrator Marian Allen, published several moving poems about their ill-fated relationship, including 'The Wind on the Downs'.
The names of both sons appear on Dunscar War Memorial and on the Roll of Honour at Christ Church, Walmsley.
