His first job was as a pony driver at School Pit. Later became as checkweighman at the Hulton Colliery Company's Chequerbent Pit, but was thrown out of work after it closed down in 1927.

Represented East Ward from 1914-38. Appointed magistrate in 1917.

Chairman of several Committees, including the Streets and Sanitary Committee. He also sat on the Juvenile Employment Committee, the Education Committee, the Hospital Committee, the After-Care Committee and the Area Guardians Committee.

Member of the Old Age Pensions Committee and the Pretoria Pit Disaster Fund Committee. Responsible for the inception of the local After Care Committee in 1913.

He was a member of the old Radical Association at Wingates. He also helped to form the Westhoughton Trades and Labour Council and was its first Chairman.

Member of the Executive of the Miners Federation of Great Britain.

In 1935 he was presented with a wallet containing £25 for his services to the Labour and Trade Union movements in Westhoughton.

An article about this presentation in the Horwich and Westhoughton Journal of 27 September 1935 called him "the Miner's Champion... and a pioneer of the Socialist movement in Westhoughton".
