Involved with the Co-operative Movement starting work with Crook Co-operative Society, County Durham as an office boy at 6s a week.

In 1910, aged 19, he came to Horwich as Assistant Secretary and, from 1922, General Secretary of Horwich Industrial Co-operative Society

He also taught classes under the auspices of the Co-operative Union.

He retired in March 1953 after 51 years as a Co-op employee

Represented South Ward 1939 -51.

Chairman of Council Staff Committee.

Chairman of the War Memorial Committee until the Garden of Remembrance was completed in Horwich.

He explained his lifelong adherence to Labour principals because in them, he believed, lay the emancipation of Mankind.
