Councillor from 1902.
He was a Governor of Rivington and Blackrod Grammar School, only retiring in 1918.
He was also a Manager of the local Council Schools and was an active worker for the Independent Methodist cause in Horwich.
He lived at 6 Pioneer Street, Horwich but was at the home of his son when he was admitted to Bolton Infirmary where he died a few days later of self-inflicted wounds. A verdict of suicide whilst temporarily of unsound mind was returned by the Bolton Borough Coroner at the inquest held at Bolton Infirmary.
