Sanitary ware manufacturer.
He started work at the age of 10 in a cotton mill. Later he was employed as a telegraph clerk with the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway, rising to Chief Clerk in the Goods Department at Spring Vale in 1899. He then became General Manager of the Turton Moor Sanitary Pipe Company before becoming Proprietor and Manager of John Crankshaw Company Limited, stoneware and pipeware manufacturers. Having acquired the sanitary ware business of Musgrave Limited he formed a new company - W R Pickup Company Limited, Horwich, manufacturers of sanitary ware. When the Associated Fire and Clay Company took over the business he was retained as a Director.
He was known as one of the first in the district to use motor transport.
He was a Councillor for 12 years.
He retired to Southport. He was visiting his daughter in Canada when he was taken ill and died and his ashes were brought home to be interred at Birkdale.
