Publican and builder - Landlord of the Bridge Hotel, Horwich.

He came to live in Horwich in 1888 from Bolton and was also Landlord of the Bee Hive Hotel, Horwich for nine years. In the 1901 census he is described as a Builder of Property residing at the Old Greenwood Tavern, Carwood House. He was then engaged in the building trade, erecting cottages and other properties in the vicinity of his house.

Councillor from 1896-1906.

He took part in the famous all night meeting to re-elect a Chairman for 1902-03. In 1906 he retired from Council, having been disqualified from office.

He was an Overseer of the Poor for six years.

He was a Member of the Ancient Order of Foresters, holding principal office and was also a Freemason.

Anglican - he had strong associations with Horwich Parish Church.

His obituary states that he previously taught as a teacher in Bolton.
