Started work at 12 years old at The Lever Bank Bleachworks, staying there for 30 years. He then entered business as a confectioner in High Street.
Represented Stopes Ward for 25 years.
President of the Reform Club and was associated with its formation in the village. During the First World War he was Chairman of the Comforts Committee.
Congregationalist - he was connected with Little Lever Congregational Church and Sunday School all his life and was a teacher there from his early teens. He was Sunday School Superintendent for many years and a Deacon for 40 years. He was also a Day School Manager.
