Joined the Royal Navy after the First World War and completed 30 years service rising to the rank of Lieutenant (Engineering) before leaving in 1946.

In 1947 he began work for Robert Fletcher and Sons Papermakers, his first task being to convert the firm's Lancashire boilers from coal to oil burning. He retired in 1966 after 19 years service.

At his retirement presentation at Robert Fletcher's, the Company Secretary, Arnold Woodcock, presented him with a wristwatch and complimented him on his work in making the water of the River Irwell fit for papermaking.

Represented North Ward for 12 years.

Chairman of Finance and a member of the Divisional Education Executive Committee.

He was a Governor of Worsley College, Farnworth Grammar School and George Tomlinson School and was also Chairman of the managers of Queen Street, Prestolee and Kearsley West Primary Schools and a Manager of Ringley C of E Primary School.

Treasurer of Farnworth Constituency Labour Party and Secretary / Treasurer of Kearsley Labour Party.

He lived at Stonecroft, Ringley Old Brow.
