He represented the Council on the Bolton and District Regional Planning Committee, was a member of the Manchester and District Smoke Abatement Committee, a representative on the East Lancashire Playing Fields Association and served on the Bolton Guardians Committee.
Trustee of the John Rishton Charity and on the governing body of the Henry Mather Foundation. He was a manager of Kearsley West and St John's Schools and was a member of the Kearsley Area Elementary Education Committee.
Actively associated with the Cooperative movement. He was a member of the Committee of the Farnworth and Kearsley Cooperative Society.
He was on the Committee of Kearsley Cricket Club and was also associated with Kearsley Celtic Football Club.
