Elizabeth Brown - The Mayors of Bolton Directory

First (and only) female Mayor of Farnworth.

Born Elizabeth Casement - known as Betty.

Wife of George Kenyon Brown, Mayor of Farnworth 1965-66.

They had 6 children themselves, adopted a son and fostered over 40 other children.

Worked as a SRN at Bolton Royal Infirmary, Bolton General Hospital and also in North Wales.

Represented North East Ward.

One of the main instigators of the Bolton Dial-a-Ride service.

Member of a number of Committees including, Health, Baths and Markets, Parks and Entertainment.

In 1970 she was elected as Lancashire County Councillor for the Western Division of Farnworth.

Served as a member of the County Council Social Services and Parliamentary Coordination Committees. 

Awarded British Empire Medal in 1988 for services to the community.

Awarded Honorary Fellowship of Bolton Institute 1991.

Vice-Chairman of Haysbrook, Lostock, Firwood and Woodside Special Schools.

Vice-Chairman of Plodder Lane, Cherry Tree and Highfield Schools and a Governor of Harper Green School.

Mrs Brown was a tireless campaigner and fund raiser for the handicapped, made more urgent in 1976 by her own diagnosis of viral meningitis which forced her into a wheelchair for ten years.

Whilst in hospital she established the charity 'Breathe' to buy more breathing equipment for hospital patients

Her eldest daughter, Mrs Katherine Lesley Hulme, was Mayoress.
