Father of James Melville White, Mayor of Farnworth 1955-56.
He first worked in the cabinet department at Bolton Co-operative Society. In 1902 he came to work for the Farnworth Co-operative Society and in 1919 he was appointed Manager of the furnishing department, a position he held until his retirement in 1946.
He was first elected to Farnworth UDC in 1923, retiring in 1929.
Chairman of Farnworth Education Committee in 1927.
He represented the Co-operative Employees Trade Union Branch on Farnworth Trades Council, of which he was President in 1915.
In the First World War he served with the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment in France before being transferred to the Balloon Section of the RFC.
He was one of the oldest members of the RAF Association (Farnworth Branch.)
Roman Catholic - he attended St Gregory's RC Church in Farnworth.
