Cashier and Director (Cotton Mills).
Son of Joseph Young, undermanager at Lord Bradford's Raikes Colliery.
Started work as a clerk in the goods office at Moses Gate, remaining there until he was 17. He then worked for Thomas Barnes & Co for 37 years, eventually becoming Managing Director.
Represented North East Ward for 17 years.
Chairman of the Education Committee.
Opened the new Queen Street Council School 25 June 1914.
With his wife he was presented to King George V on the occasion of his visit to Bolton.
Chairman of the Central Conservative Club for two years.
He was one of the founders of Doe Hey Bowling Club.
He was usually to be seen with a flower in his coat as he was a keen horticulturist and took great pride in his garden.
Freemason - a founder and first Worshipful Master of Centenary Lodge.
Anglican - he worshipped at St James's Church New Bury and was a Warden, Sidesman and Sunday School teacher for over 30 years. He was also associated with St John's where he was also a Warden.
Lived at Birch House, Bolton Road.
On vacating the Chairmanship he said he "...did not know of any Council which had carried on its business in a more thorough and friendly way and this helped towards efficiency."
