Supermarket employee.
He came to Bolton in 1974 from Bessbrook in County Armagh, Northern Ireland.
Worked as an engineering apprentice for Roberts Filling Machines on Derby Street and joined the Engineering Union.
In 1980 he was elected to Bolton Council for the Daubhill ward, and was a councillor for 18 years.
He was elected again in 2012 for the Tonge with the Haulgh ward.
Governor of Firwood School, Bolton Parish Church CE Primary School and Clarendon Primary School.
Worked at Sainsbury's superstore in Trinity Street in the magazine section and enjoyed his job so much that vowed to keep fitting in shifts around his regular Mayoral duties.
Awarded an Honorary Doctorate by Bolton University on July 2015.
He choose two of his co-workers, Mrs Gay Wharton and Mrs Jacqueline Tracey to be joint Mayoresses.
