An engineer by trade, but also spent time as a medic in the RAF.
First elected to Bolton Borough Council in 1970 and then represented Farnworth continuously from 1992.
Held a number of positions connected with housing, including Chair of Housing Committee, Executive Member for Housing, Chair of North West Housing Forum and Chair of Bolton at Home.
Awarded MBE for Services to Social Housing in 2007.
As an accomplished amateur vocalist he enjoyed performing the songs of Frank Sinatra and others from that era.
His partner, Mrs Alice Spencer, was Mayoress.
Made Honorary Alderman 15 August 2018.
