Chef and Caterer.
Began work at Percival's in Bolton Market Hall.
He later ran the firm's outside catering operation and the Lamplighter Restaurant, eventually becoming Director of Smithills Holdings in 1966 alongside Smithills Coaching House founders and fellow Mayors of Bolton, Donald and Alan Clarke.
Represented Halliwell Ward 1983-2021.
Leader of the Labour Group June 2004 - December 2017. Leader of Bolton Council 24 May 2006 - 7 January 2018.
Unsuccessfully contested the Bolton West Constituency in the 1992 general election.
From its creation in 2011 he was the Greater Manchester Combined Authority's lead on health and then culture until January 2018.
Awarded an Honorary Doctorate by Bolton University on 12 July 2012.
Made Honorary Alderman 2021.
His wife, Doreen, was Mayoress.
