Worked in engineering and was a plate moulder with Metropolitan Vickers, Trafford Park, Manchester.
He enlisted in the 5th Battalion, Loyal North Lancashire Regiment on 12 February 1915 and saw service in France during the First World War.
Represented Derby Ward from 1946. Alderman
Chairman of Bolton District Joint Sewerage Board, the Markets Committee and the Cleansing Committee.
Opened Delph Sailing Club's new clubhouse at Delph Reservoir, Egerton on Sunday 12 May 1968.
Accompanied Queen Elizabeth II to St Paul's Place, Halliwell, Bolton on Friday 17 May 1968 to view the results of 'Operation Clean Up'.
Became Mayor on his 75th birthday. He was elected in preference to Alderman Walter Walsh. Both candidates had been Council members for 20 years but Alderman Walsh had been expelled form the Labour Party two years earlier and was then sitting as an Independent.
As Mayor he was presented with a golden key and certificate by Mr Phillip Burnham, an ex-resident of Bolton living in the USA, making him (and all subsequent Mayors of Bolton) an Honorary Citizen of the town of Greece, New York.
He was a staunch Socialist and Trade Unionist and was Secretary of the Bolton Branch of the Amalgamated Moulders Union and President of the National Executive.
His wife, Adeline, was Mayoress.
