Linen and woollen draper.
It had been intended that he should join the Church, but he wanted a career in business and became apprenticed to Peter Drummond, a draper on Deansgate, Manchester.
He came to Bolton in 1829 and opened a shop of on Deansgate (Opposite the Four Horse Shoes public house) in connection with Mr Drummond. His abilities developed the business and he eventually became independent from Drummond. In 1845 he moved to larger premises at Yorkshire House, Deansgate and in 1857 he took on a partner, becoming Orton & Ward until retiring in 1864.
Represented Exchange Ward 1852-61. Alderman for Bradford Ward 1861-68.
Chairman of the Streets Committee.
Borough Magistrate.
He was a Director of the Bank of Bolton and one of the earliest promoters of the Public Baths.
Wesleyan - he held many offices in the Bolton Wesleyan Circuit including Steward, Treasurer and Missionary Secretary.
His wife, Jane, was Mayoress.
His last words were "I think Mr Cannon and Mr Musgrave are waiting for me."
