Proposal to close rail ticket offices in Greater Manchester, including Bolton - Consultations

Description

The Rail Industry and Government have announced proposals to close rail station ticket offices or reduce their operating hours. The changes would come into effect over an 18-month period following the conclusion of the consultation process.

Northern proposal:

  • Of the 53 Northern ticket offices, 46 would close and seven will would have reduced hours.
  • For 36 out of the 46 closures, staffing would be retained outside the ticket office, but for only 2 hours per day Monday to Friday; nine would have between 3.5 and 7 hours of staffing; one would have less than 2 hours of staffing.
  • Nationally 1-in-8 tickets are sold via a ticket office. However, for Northern this is higher (1-in-6).
  • Northern’s proposals would also see around 40% of existing staff hours retained
